An unpublished handlist of the Rylands Irish Manuscripts provides a brief list of the Kelly Irish Manuscripts Collection (Rylands Irish MSS ). This list was compiled while the Collection was in the Bibliotheca Lindesiana of the Earls of Crawford, and is largely based on the sale catalogue of the Library of Denis H. Kelly (see bibliography).

Of Pr. Books. One of the most spectacular displays of ornamented text in early Irish manuscripts is the Chi-Rho page in the Book of Kells (fig.

These elaborately decorated initials are found not only in luxury volumes such as the Book of Kells, the Lindisfarne Gospels (fig. 2a), the Codex Aureus (fig. 2b) and the Lichfield Gospels (fig. 2c), but also in Irish pocket Gospels like our Book of Mulling (see. The Stowe manuscripts are a collection of about 2, Irish, Anglo-Saxon and later medieval manuscripts, nearly all now in the British manuscripts date from to the end of the 14th century.

The manuscripts were originally collected by the 1st Marquess of Buckingham ( - ) and his son, the 1st Duke of Buckingham and Chandos ( - ), at Stowe House near Buckingham. When the Book of Mulling (TCD MS 60) was received in the Conservation Department of Trinity College back init was sporting a binding that had been carried out by the British Museum in the late 19 th century.

The style of binding was similar to that employed for Codex Usserianus Primus (TCD MS 55) (see previous post) and involved the now individual vellum folios being glued around their.

As we pointed out in a previous post, three of the Gospel Books under examination were formerly kept in book-shrines. The shrines are extant for the Book of Dimma (TCD; fig.

1) and the Book of Mulling (National Museum of Ireland), while the damage visible on Codex Usserianus Primus implies that it was also kept in a metal box for some time (see more on this HERE). Indeed, he was an assiduous collector of manuscripts and owned the Book of Dimma (TCD MS 59); he also studied closely the Book of Armagh (TCD MS 52) and the Misach (National Museum of Ireland).

From its establishment in the Academy Library has actively collected manuscript material in the Irish language.
